The new heraeus innovation center textile facade: atemporal design with permanent solar protection

A perforated textile facade membrane provides permanent solar protection with conceal and reveal effects for the innovation center of Heraeus Hanau.

The Innovation Center Heraeus was designed as a clear, geometric building wrapped with a white monolithic facade. The skin is not necessarily perceived as tensile textile facade at first glance. The permanent solar protection is composed of a perforated membrane which delivers changing aspects depending on light and view angles.

Permanent solar protection

The facade mesh used in the project has an opening factor of 22% to provide good see through visibility. Thanks to additional light diffusion properties, the membranes provides ~30% daylight inside the building. The permanent textile shading maximise interior climate control.

Access to natural daylight: human physiology developed under natural daylight, not in biological darkness

More than solar control, the facade mesh offers good natural light conditions with excellent glare control. Natural diffused light entering the building offices provides qualitative light for comfort for the occupants. Some research papers demonstrate that it has a positive impact on occupant comfort (i.e. impact on circadian cycle, human physiology, reduction of myopia development or focus attention of occupants).
