Fluo2Max membrane chosen to reskin the Kundl ice rink arena roof

For this reskinning project, a non-Sioen membrane was replaced by our Fluo2Max thanks to its temperature resistance, easy cleaning and translucency.

The Kundl Ice Arena hosts the EHC Crocodiles hockey team of Kundl. The Ice rink is used for numerous events such as curling, indoor soccer (in summer) and various skating trainings. In 2017, the existing membrane of the Kundl Ice Arena in Kundl, Austria had to be replaced. Our Fluo2Max membrane was chosen thanks to its resistance to a high variation of temperatures, its easy cleaning properties and its translucency.

As temperatures in Austria vary depending on whether it’s winter or summer, the new membrane had to be temperature variation proof. It covers an ice rink in winter, when the temperatures can be very low on both the inside as well as the outside of the structure. In addition, the membrane provides an efficient climate control that maintains the ice when the outside temperatures are too high. Then, in summer, the structure is used for different applications and temperatures can reach high levels.

Second, as the Kundl Ice Arena is located close to both a railway and a quarry pit, numerous dirt particles land on the membrane daily. Thanks to its low-maintenance and easy-to-clean properties, those particles are easily removed when it is raining.

Further, the Fluo²Max’s excellent translucency and translucence consistency help limiting the arena’s energy use, as less artificial lights are needed and makes it, thus, more energy-efficient. In addition, the translucency creates a beautiful, natural atmosphere.

Another sustainable advantage of this project, is that the existing structure was reskinned using the existing primary structure, i.e. the clamps, trusses, arches, etc. This reduced the environmental impact of the membrane update.

The designing team for the Kundle Ice Arena is the local HVW Architekten bureau with approximately 15 architects specialised in both housing and industrial buildings. The manufacturer, however, is Koch Membranen, an experienced German manufacturing company. They cut and weld the Sioen membrane, a Type 3 low wick coated membrane of 1150g/m² into the right shapes.

This membrane is anti-bacteria treated, UV resistant and flame retardant. For the producer of the roof, Koch Membranen, the processing was made easy thanks to the fact that both sides are directly weldable PVDF top coated.

An ice rink (or ice skating rink) is a frozen body of water and/or hardened chemicals where people can ice skate or play winter sports. Besides recreational ice skating, some of its uses include ice hockey, bandy, rink bandy, ringette, broomball, speed skating, figure skating, ice stock sport and curling as well as exhibitions, contests and ice shows.
